Designing CLIL – Content and Language Integrated Learning

>> Scope: Design classes and lessons using CLIL – Content and Language Integrated Learning methodologies.

>> Aim: The Designing CLIL course is an introduction to CLIL method – Content and Language Integrated Learning and addresses teachers and educators of different subjects, as well as English language teachers that are willing to experiment and implement the CLIL method.

>> Target groups: Teachers and trainers in primary, secondary schools, vocational education schools and organizations, teaching English as foreign language or using English language in their instruction.

>> Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the training course, you are expected to be able to:
- understand the theoretical aspects and the underlying principles of CLIL
- design and plan the instructions, so as to achieve learning objectives in content and in English language
- develop speaking and listening skills for students in English language
- assess English language skills to students

>> Methodology and learning material: The preparation phase includes a learning needs analysis that is being conducted with a standardised questionnaire.
The course instruction applies active learning techniques and the participants are called to bring their own cases and work with them, in hands-on activity. The participants have access to IDEC library including a number of publications presenting CLIL methods and lesson plans from Cambridge, Oxford and other publishers, including CLIL methods for specific subjects e.g. biology, chemistry, mathematics, etc. the instructor will present learning scenarios and learning content, nevertheless she will focus on the methodology for the creation of new scenarios, tailored to the classroom needs of each participant. During hands-on activities, the participants will explore ready learning scenarios from the bibliography, in order to get inspired and develop their own methods and learning contents.
The participants will receive a dossier with learning material consisting of the presentations and support material, in English language.
As a follow up, the participants are invited to join our Facebook group and network with other participants of IDEC courses. The participants of the Facebook group are exchanging ideas and practices regularly and often are asked to join new European projects, based on their interests. IDEC staff will provide all necessary support to facilitate your entry into new European project proposals.

>> Why selecting this course?
Content and Language Integrated Learning is a new method of instruction, where teachers teach their own subject (e.g. history, physics, etc) in a foreign language. With CLIL method, the students are learning the subject and at the same time, they are practicing foreign language skills. Foreign language is being learnt in an experiential and natural way and the students are practicing their listening and speaking skills.
CLIL method has been introduced with great results in several European countries. CLIL is a type of bilingual education and it is documented that students that have been instructed with CLIL method are demonstrating better and faster acquisition of foreign language skills, as the language is not another subject to be taught, but a means for communication. With CLIL, students consolidate the foreign language, as they learn to think in this language.
The Designing CLIL course focuses on CLIL with the use of English language. It is an introductory course for teachers without previous experience on this new method. The course provides the necessary theoretical background for understanding the benefits, the context and the requirements for using CLIL. It is a practical course focusing on hands-on activities. Using scaffolding method, the participants are building step by step their own learning scenarios and content.
The course organiser, IDEC is an organization with great experience in European projects, having participated in more than 300 European projects and has cooperated with more than 700 organisations from all over Europe, since the 90s. By joining this course, you will be supported in placing your organisation into the framework of European projects, joining the Facebook group and networking with other course participants.

Note: The training sessions are being held between 9:00 – 14:00 daily with two coffee breaks. Small adjustments can be made to accommodate the cultural activities and the study visit.
