Course Description

As teachers, our job is to provide academic learning but also to provide a sense of safety in which students can grow, feel nurtured and find themselves. For this to occur, we have to let every child feel that they are welcomed which is why gender education is so important as it leads to inclusive learning. Gender roles and stereotypes lead students onto paths which they feel they may need to follow. This can lead to stress, emotional and body issues and depression to name a few. To tackle gender stereotypes and to create a more inclusive classroom, we need to deal with this issue yet it can be difficult to find the correct method. Using Finnish pedagogy that allows critical thinking, deep learning and reflection, we will go through certain methods that can get students to overcome these stereotypes and can lead to a more inclusive classroom.

In this course, we will look at

-How students are already heavily influenced by gender stereotypes once they enter the school system;
-How gender stereotypes affect boys and girls in school and later on;
-How, we, teachers can heavily influence how students see gender.

We will also look at practical ways

-To deal with students when the topic of gender stereotypes arises in the classroom;
-How to teach gender equity in the classroom and tips which can help when designing your lessons.

We will also have time to construct your lessons that can be used when returning to your classroom.
