Course Description

As classrooms are increasingly getting more diverse, teachers need approaches to bridge the gaps in language, culture, and communication. Drama develops empathy, tolerance, and opens up perspectives about the world, our differences and the human condition. Hence, it can be the universal language to engage immigrant students who may need help assimilating to a new culture and language.

In the symbolic city of Berlin, participants to the course will learn to break down the barriers of communication and culture between themselves, their students and society by practicing dramatic activities tailored to address their specific identified issues of cultural differences, disunity and disconnection within the classroom or organization.

The course will introduce the participants to various drama methodologies such as Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, a Theatre for Mutual Understanding, and Theatre for Social Justice; as well as other conflict resolution techniques such as Active Listening to increase better relations between people of different cultures. Participants will also learn how to create a safe, engaging classroom that is conducive to open-hearted collaboration with students of all ages, cultures, economic statuses and nationalities.
