Course Description

Our society is becoming faster and faster, and more and more demanding. Within that, students seem to be every day less motivated to learn pure contents, and more in need for skills for building their life path and professional careers. At the same time, teachers often feel they lack effective tools to educate nowadays’ learners and, at the same time, to deal with nowadays’ school curricula.

This course will guide participants in finding a “compromise” between the demands of school curricula, students’ motivations and the need to develop their competences.

Participants will inquire how theories can be connected to real life, how knowledge is incorporated into wide competences, as well as what “competence” should mean in the educational domain. They will explore features, examples, pros and cons of various teaching methodologies. They will also get involved in many practical activities to design lessons with task-based learning, project-based learning and the flipped classroom. In addition, they will get ideas on how to possibly incorporate visual resources to introduce some topics, as well as on how to assess students during the learning process with the use of rubrics.

No prior-knowledge about those specific topics is required from participants.

By the end of the course, participants should be more familiar with the concept of competences in nowadays’ education, and feel more creative in finding out taylor-made solutions using tools such as task-based learning, project-based learning, the flipped classroom and the visual thinking strategy. They will take away lesson plans and activities with the aim of making subjects more relevant, meaningful and useful for students’ lives and careers.

The course was conducted with an international group. We were a team of 14 teachers in total with Greek teams from 2 different schools, German participants from 2 different schools, one Croatian participant and a group of 5 people from my school. Our courses lasted until 2 p.m. every day. In addition to theoretical instructions, we did group workshops every day. We had a very productive week.

The course “21st century skills for teachers and students” has met my expectations. It has allowed me to learn about different educational strategies, as ICT tools for engage my students and keep their attention. Furthermore, I have learn from my colleagues. However, it was a shame not to be of different nationalities. We were all from Spain.

The course (21st Century Skills for Teachers and Students) included lots of issues, and our teacher managed to get us focused to the ones that were most important for each of us. We defined our tasks and, during the week, we found out new ways to pursue them. I extremely liked practical activities (especially the Jigsaw), warming up activities and collaborative works, because I could see with my eyes and try personally the "behind the scenes", understanding the feelings of my students and learning new skills to get them involved. I discovered some new methods and some new ICT and apps that will be really useful for my work in my classrooms. The contribute given by other colleague's advices was very important and enriching. On the other hand, the course has sometimes given too generic informations, maybe because of our different backgrounds (primary school teachers, secondary school teachers, teachers for adults). The field of analysis (21st Century Skills) is so big that each issue should be studied, analysed and tried for at least one week. Moreover, we didn't have lots of cultural exchanges because most of us were teachers coming from Italy, so I'd suggest to mix up more the nationalities in the classroom. Despite these little remarks, the school was really nice. They always gave us the opportunity to have wonderful breaks with hot tea/coffee and some fresh fruit and, even if the windows were always open due to Covid, the atmosphere in the classroom was warm and welcoming. I must say this has been a really good experience!

The course provider did a good job. The course was organized in the morning, and the mobility included getting to know the cultural and historical city of Dublin as well as a day trip (Cliffs of Moher + Galway). The course leader was excellently prepared and led the course very well. Through the course, we learned about many activities that develop the 21st century skills for students and teachers. The only complaint is that the teaching methods used to improve the mentioned skills are only theoretically explained, ie concrete examples were missing. The working atmosphere was great. Through the activities, we also received information about education systems in other participating countries.

Icebreaker activities and presentations of schools were the initial activities of the course. Participants discussed the topic of the 21st century competencies for students and teachers and considered different learning and classroom styles. Participants were involved in many practical activities to design lessons using teaching methods such as task-based learning, project-based learning, the flipped classroom and gamification. Lesson plans were designed and the pros and cons of each teaching method were examined. Furthermore, participants were made aware of the diversity that exists in every classroom and the need for changes in the 21st century classroom in order to meet the diverse needs of our students. Different ways of building empathy for others were discussed. Creativity, as a concept and within a classroom setting, was discussed and creative tasks were completed. Different IT tools and applications were introduced for various purposes. Edmodo was introduced as a tool for organizing a class. Other applications presented were padlet, wheeldecide, mentimeter and nearpod. The 4 C's of education were practised through meaningful activities. Different learning models (the 6 hats model and the jigsaw model) were seen in practice and a leadership workshop was held. The course provider, Europass Teacher Academy, provided useful information and sent a questionnaire before the start of the course so as to cater for the needs of the participants.
