Joy of Reading

Joy of Reading is a three-year (2012-2015) national literacy programme led by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture and implemented by the University of Oulu Faculty of Humanities (Information Studies) and Faculty of Education.
In the Lukuinto (Joy of Reading) programme, libraries and schools are developing novel models that promote multiliteracies, new reading and writing skills as well as the joy of reading. The methods tested by the pilot schools and libraries combine traditional working methods with new methods, many of which have been developed at Joy of Reading training events.
The pilot projects have been carried out using benchmarking: gathering existing practices and improving them. Schools and libraries have benchmarked practices that suit their school and library concept and match their resources and skills.
The practices developed during the Joy of Reading programme range from projects lasting several months to small ideas that can easily be adopted into the operating culture of a school or library. The idea is that proposed sample activities will be further developed to serve different types of schools and libraries, families, children and youths in an individual and case-specific manner. By benchmarking ideas, library professionals and teachers can offer children and youths new, alternative ways of demonstrating their skills and becoming enthusiastic about learning.
