Course Description
This engaging and fun course uses the city of Florence as content and aims at developing academic and language teachers’ knowledge of planning, preparing, and implementing reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities for non-native speakers of a language in their classrooms. It also takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding CLIL (or content based) methodology and introduces course participants to how the theory of teaching language and specific course content (academic or otherwise) can relate to their own classroom practice.
This course includes lots of activity planning, CLIL resources, and aids in the preparation of creative and engaging materials for second or foreign language learners of any language.
By the end of the course, participants will learn the key principles of material development and how to integrate attractive content into effective second language teaching. Participants will become more aware of how to create appropriate activities that are also motivating and engaging to non-native speakers of a language. Both academic content and language teachers will feel more confident and inspired to teach their subjects. Participants will also leave Florence having learned more about the history, people, and places that have made the city of Florence a one of a kind city with a very unique past and present.

It was in Florence, Italy. A training centre for teachers. The instructor was very professional and made the course enjoyable.

I have attended the course CLIL in Practice: Focus on Florence. It has been a very practical course in which I have learned new activities I am already implementing with my students. The experience with the course provider has been very good: fluent communication and all procedures have been fast and easy.

Our training in Florence was an interesting course, provided with different activities focused on the city, history and culture of Florence. We learnt different activities, dynamics and strategies in order to improve our background. Despite the course was really interesting, I expected to receive a more specific training of CLIC, but it was a great experience, shared with teacher of different places of Europe.

It was a very interesting experience, sharing ideas and different kind of methods and strategies. On the other hand, the focus of my course turned out very satisfactory.

On the one hand, the course was interesting in terms of cultural and historical content, as it was based on Florence. I learnt a lot about the city and its history and culture, whose content will be taught to my students. Every day, we went to museums that were included in the course timetable in order to enhance the learning of languages using authentical materials, that was one of the main aims of the course. On the other hand, the course was not as useful as I thought. I believe that the objectives were not fulfilled: one of them was to design creative and engaging activities. I do not agree with it, since every day the activities were very boring and they were not creative, such as fill in the gaps while listening or reading aloud. These kinds of activities are not creative, since it is not an active methodology that will engage students. Similarly, it was not a motivating and current methodology, we used a lot of photocopies and we were not given any app to carry out CLIL with our students. Also, another objective was to encourage the collaborative learning. We just work in groups or with a partner a few times, we worked alone almost of the time. In conclusion, I would recommend the course in order to learn about history and culture in Florence. However, I would not recommend it in terms of methodology and its application to the classroom, I was wondering a course to apply new methodology and apps to teach CLIL to my students, but in fact it did not fullfil my expectations.
