CULTURAL HERITAGE: CULTURAL AWARENESS AND EXPRESSION

The course aims to spread in the participants a broader and deeper understanding of the archaeological, artistic and architectural heritage of Rome, through a historical guided pathway to places of interest and visits to the most representative museums of the Italian capital, making a direct experience and comparing it with the culture of origin.
This objective meets the priorities represented at European level regarding the consolidation of a common culture through the appreciation of the importance of cultural and artistic creations, in the direction of the development of key competencies; this seems even more relevant for the construction of a common background of cultural and artistic awareness in view of the entry of new countries into the EU.

Methodology
The methodology of the course is based on learning by doing in a dimension that enhances the non‐formal and experiential moments. In the course will be alternated moments of outdoor activities, consisting of visits, observations, discussion, documentation, with moments of museum education, consisting of guided and interactive tours in some representative museums. Lectures will be minimized and will be linked to both moments, with explanations and references in order to enabling participants to contextualize and frame logically their visiting experience. All activities will be conducted by experts who will guide the participants to discover the artistic and cultural heritage of the city of Rome, in a multi‐cultural approach open to the debate and the comparison with the cultural realities of the participants. Participants will use the online space of the course to share their impression, pictures of the visits and debate day‐to‐day. The course is organized by themes: each day will be devoted to a particular topic, with visits and activities to gain knowledge of the artistic and cultural realities and make direct experience. At the end of each day there will be a moment of individual self‐assessment; at the end of the course there will be a session of evaluation and assessment of the outcomes. The self-assessment tool, realized in the Grundtvig VINTAGE project (527349-LLP-1-2012-1-IT-GRUNDTVIG-GMP), will support the self-assessment of the cultural awareness and expression.
Follow‐up
After the course participants will have the opportunity to interact in the online space of Learning Community, continuing to exchange ideas and information about the topics of the course and creating a community of practice in which share ideas, practices, and solutions.

Programme
DAY 1: parks and buildings of the noble roman families.
9:00 – 10:00: welcome and registration of participants; presentation of the staff and introduction
to the course.
10:00 – 12:00: outdoor activity. Villa Ada Savoia and its gardens, from Pallavicini to Savoia family.
(century 17th). The surroundings: the ancient via Salaria and the Catacombs of Priscilla.

12:00‐12:30: break
12:30‐14:00: outdoor activity. Villa Torlonia and the district Coppedè. Villa Torlonia (century 17th), from Colonna to Torlonia family. The neoclassic style of Giuseppe Valadier, the Liberty style and the buildings: Casina delle Civette, Casino dei Principi, Casino Nobile, Tempio di Saturno. Art Decò in Rome: the district Coppedè.

DAY 2: ancient and modern Rome: archeological and artistic heritage.
9:00‐12:00: museum. The Capitolino Museum, the most ancient public museum in the world, that houses a considerable quantity of archaeological examples in addition to a significant collection of mediaeval and modern works. The Michelangelo’s Campidoglio square. Guided tour.
12:00‐12:30: break
12:30‐14:00: outdoor activity. Palatino and Foro Romano. The heart of the ancient city: the area of Roma forum, that mark the founding of Rome in the 8th century BC, and later housed Augustus Caesar’s official government centres. The area of the Anfiteatro Flavio (Colosseo), and the Fori Imperiali space.

DAY 3: the Rome of Risorgimento
9:00‐10:30: outdoor activity. Visit to the sites of the Risorgiment, a fundamental moment in the Italian history. Gianicolo, visit to the hill and the Aurelian walls; places of the battle of 1849 between the forces of Garibaldi, defending the revolutionary Roman Republic against French forces.
10:30‐12:00: museum. Guided tour in the Museo della Repubblica Romana e della Memoria Garibaldina: journey through historical documents, works of art, media and educational resources, the exhibition path evokes the history, the places and the leading personalities of the Roman Republic, a fundamental moment of the Italian Risorgimento.

12:00‐12:30: break
12:30‐14:00: outdoor activity. Trastevere, the area across the Tiber belonged to the Etruscans, anciently called Ripa Etrusca . Building, squares, architecture. Tiber and Tiber Island. To the archeological area of Circo Massimo: guided walking.

DAY 4: Architecture of Renaissance and Baroque Rome
9:00‐10:30: outdoor activity. Villa Borghese Pinciana (century 17th), its gardens and art collections.
Architectural treasures: Casino nobile, Casino dei giuochi d’acqua (Aranciera) and Giardino del lago.
10:30‐12:00: museum. The Museo Bilotti and its collection of contemporary art (with art works by Giorgio De Chirico, Giacomo Manzù and others).
12:00‐12:30: break
12:30‐14:00: outdoor activity. Pincio, Trinità dei Monti, Piazza di Spagna and surroundings.
Bernini’s Porta del Popolo, the Valadier’s Casina, historical sculptures and decorations.

DAY 5: squares, churches and monuments
9:00‐12:00: outdoor activity. The archaeological area of Largo Argentina and Piazza Venezia, with the Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II Navona Square and its baroque architecture; Bernini, Borromini, Della Porta. The church of San Luigi dei Francesi and Caravaggio’s paintings. To Ponte Sant’Angelo and the gardens of Castel Sant’Angelo: guided walking.

12:00‐12:30: break
12:30‐14:00: retrospective of the course, evaluation and conclusion; delivery of the certificates and closing of the course.
