EUROCLIO: supporting democracy and tolerance through innovative history education

Recognition of diversity and multi-perspectivity are at the heart of EUROCLIO, the European Association of History Educators. Its aims are influencing education reform processes, cooperating with cross-border networks and stimulating participation in professional development.
EUROCLIO membership consists of 70 organisations, associations and institutions dealing with history, heritage and citizenship education inside and beyond Europe, from 40 different countries.
The network tackles fundamental topics for the development of democratic societies in Europe and beyond by developing responsible and innovative history, citizenship and heritage education. Their work is based on critical thinking, multi-perspectivity, mutual respect and the inclusion of controversial issues. It supports all of this by connecting professionals across boundaries of communities, countries, ethnicities and religions as well as through capacity building for educators and producing and implementing innovative teaching tools.
In March 2016, EUROCLIO will host its 23rd Annual Conference, "Reimagining Remembrance". Taking place near Easter, in Northern Ireland, the event aims at discovering how to deal with the legacy of a violent past in history and heritage education. With the aim of building transformative peace, participants will discuss how to teach controversial history in a responsible manner through a highly (inter)active and engaging programme with workshops, dialogue tables, open spaces, on-site study visits, public debate and reflective and interactive panels.
Among many other projects and dissemination activities by EUROCLIO in the years is Historiana, an on-line educational multimedia tool that offers students multi-perspective, cross-border and comparative historical sources to supplement their national history textbooks. Started back in 2007, it has since become the dissemination tool for all EUROCLIO projects and is in continuous development to cater for the changing needs of history educators.
