Learners may go through difficult periods in their social and/or family lives or may have negative school experiences that throw them off track. Early detection of learning difficulties, socio-emotional distress, or disengagement is vital – before they manifest through school absenteeism, or inappropriate behaviour. Schools need to establish an early warning and monitoring system in collaboration with the family. Effective identification and monitoring should not be seen as a bureaucratic and disciplinary process that only records and responds to incidents of absenteeism or misconduct, but more of a support (warning) system. Learners need to know that they matter and are cared for.

The ICAM (Including Children Affected by Migration) programme is an Erasmus+ programme designed to ensure that children who have been affected by migration can access education. The programme helps schools to create a safe and secure environment for children affected by migration to enable them to take full advantage of their education.

MiCREATE – Migrant Children and Communities in a Transforming Europe

The objective of the MiCREATE project is to encourage the inclusion of diverse groups of migrant children by adopting a child-centred approach to the integration of migrant children at educational and policy level. Stemming from the need to revisit the existing integration policies, the research project aims to comprehensively examine the contemporary integration processes of migrant children to enhance their agency, participation, and well-being.

Mobile Squads

The Mobile Squads have been created to support schools address a range of factors that may lead to early school leaving. The services of the 'Mobile Squads' are requested by the school governing body and may refer to: absenteeism and school dropout; behaviour problems; conflicts between adults; educational staff training; and assistance for students, members of staff and school leaders. For more complex situations, the 'Mobile Squad' can decide to refer the case to more appropriate services.

Programme Tutorat

The Free University of Brussels (ULB) created in 1989 a Tutoring program which aims to equality in opportunities, engagement, collaboration with schools, quality, and development. Piloted since 2006 by Schola ULB it is the largest free school support system in the Brussels-Capital Region.

RESL.eu Toolkit for identifying and monitoring students and schools at risk of ESL

The toolkit developed as part of the valorisation of the findings by the Reducing Early School Leaving in Europe (RESL.eu) research project aims to support practitioners working with youth in identifying and monitoring students and schools in need of greater care and support. It is primarily focused on the situation of those young people who are at risk of school disengagement and early school leaving. The toolkit is primarily dedicated to school staff: principals, teachers, educators, pedagogical counsellors, class tutors and school psychologists. However, it might be also helpful for other educational specialists working in education policies and in alternative learning pathways.

Youth coaches in Belgium-Flanders

In this project, young people are coaching their peers in secondary schools, aged between 11-18 years at risk of drop-out. The coaches are early school leavers themselves and have similar backgrounds. They have credibility and can detect problems in an early phase and prevent escalation. This project empowers them and helps them to achieve a qualification and, later, a job.
