Foghlaim bhreisithe agus sheach-churaclaim

Extra-curricular and out-of-school educational activities may either have a strong academic component or a more informal learning and development approach. These activities, when compatible and coherent with educational aims, may provide additional opportunities for young people to 'shine' and can increase motivation and a sense of belonging with the school that they might not otherwise have. Extra-curricular and out-of-school educational activities should be designed to complement curriculum delivery and to maximise learner participation and social inclusion. They may be developed in cooperation with parents, local organisations, services and NGOs and with the involvement of volunteers from the community.

The Learning Train

In Antwerp, Belgium, student teachers may volunteer at the Schoolbridge NGO to participate in the Learning Train initiative. This initiative provides on the one hand the student teachers with an experience of involvement with parents of migrant and/or disadvantaged background, and on the other hand the parents with skills to support their children in learning. The students work with and coach the parents once a week for 60-90 minutes. This support is tailor made: depending on the needs of the parent and adapted to the school lesson or homework. The students are also coached by the educational welfare worker of the NGO Schoolbridge, in their learning process as a future teacher or social worker, as they both will work in partnership with parents of schoolchildren.
