Transform Conflicts into Learning
Conflicts allow evolution, change and growth. Most of the times they are not easy to experience, nevertheless they give us a chance to express ourselves and receive the other, in the uniqueness of both.
When asked about conflicts in classrooms and schools, teachers and educators speak about submerged tensions, unproductive competition, and very different approaches in applying guidelines. These can become challenges to the teaching itself, and the general organization of the school.
Having a method to approach conflicts step by step allows to use them as an opportunity to experience growth and create learning.
“Transform Conflicts into Learning” is a 6 days international training course designed to support educators in developing cross-disciplinary skills and immediately applicable procedures to handle conflicts constructively, creating connection and learning.
When facing conflicts, we often desire quick and simple solutions. Yet the more we want to simplify, the more the complexity of the situation can turn against us, wasting our time and energy and damaging the connection with the other(s) involved.
Every conflict situation is unique, as unique is the relationship between the people involved, hence, there’s no universal recipe on how to deal with them.
Yet, there are procedures and tools that can make the difference, supporting us in:
-developing more options
-saving time yet avoiding simplistic approaches
-keeping and enhancing the relationship
-achieving our interests while aiming for connection, not for manipulation
The training is an opportunity to learn how to:
-Lower the level of anxiety in front of conflicts
-Take a step back and observe
-Create conditions for effective communication
-Keep neutral while mediating between others
-Identify different kind of conflicts and roles we play in them
-“Read” conflict situations
-Leave behind old patterns and automatic responses
-Translate judgements into needs and interests
-Identify feelings and needs of yourself and the others, and how to give space to both of them
-Master listening and asking questions
-Free yourself from the idea of compromise, to go towards fulfillment
-Acknowledge improvements and developments
The method allows to apply to conflict handling the different elements of a competence: knowledge, skills, attitude and adjustment to the situation.
Therefore, it is a privileged chance to have a deeper and more practical understanding of key cross-disciplinary skills (21st century skills).
We work mainly with experiential learning: learning by doing and by experiencing. Through active processes and interaction with others you will observe how you deal with conflicts, and discover what and how you can do differently. By direct experience, you will also acquire effective and immediately applicable tools that will support you in implementing the new learnings in daily life.
The experience will be supported by theories, lectures, and moments for common sharing and reflection.
We will combine tools, processes and theories from different sources, such as:
Non Violent Communication
Maieutic approach to conflict management
Impro theater and body movement
Communication styles theory
Four sides model of communication
