The Summer School had a successful first edition In August 2017

Topic- New materials, such as the so called "smart" materials, may be the key to sustainability and address many of the fundamental challenges that human kind will have to meet in the coming years.
Together with the promise of unprecedented possibilities such materials also introduce delicate society issue s- from social equanimity to privacy protection and development of new eco lifestyles - which call for responsible, well informed, scientifically and technologically literate citizens.
From a strictly educational point of view innovative materials offer the opportunity to be associated with cutting-edge research topics, innovate experimental lab work at school exploiting the ‘wow’ factor, encourage students' creativity as they envision, design and implement new possible applications and last but not least evaluate their impact on society.

Course objectives
• provide recent insights on innovative materials and cutting edge materials research
• develop awareness of the potential of working with new materials in Science class
• promote experimental real inquiry based & problem based science at school
• inspire innovation in science didactical practice and curricula
• learn to enhance students creativity and innovation capability
• improve the abilities to work collaboratively and exchange best practices in transnational groups

Course content -The course will contain the following modules
• Light interacting materials
• Materials for a sustainable world
• The Internet of Things
• Printed and wearable electronics
• Setting up a materials science show and other outreach activities

Cultural events and activities will be offered in the evenings and at the weekend (i.e. visit to Lucca, hiking tour to Mount Cimone GAW Global Station, traditionl St. Bartholomew feast in the ancient hamlet of Fiumalbo by candle light).

Course approach - The Summer School will offer a thorough insight on how to boost science teaching and learning through the use and investigation of new innovative materials.
Participants will work mainly experimentally and in inquiry based mode, performing lab protocols, discussing results and implementation issues in groups with the help of the tutors. They will test the properties of new materials and discuss didactical impact and how and where to significant embed into the curriculum. Coding sessions, seminars, field trips and even how to set up a science show about new materials outreach will complete the program.
Being a “teachers to teachers” initiative the course is highly practical and particular care has been put to ensure immediate reproducibility after the course.
The participants will have access to already tested best practices equipped with a whole batch of free didactical resources (background reading, student worksheets, teachers guide, webinar recordings, etc…) along with useful tips on setting up the experiments and where to buy materials. Each participant will also bring home MoM kit of materials samples and consumables for use in their classroom (150 euro value).
Participants coming from different EU countries will particularly benefit from the international environment. Networking and exchange of best practices among will be explicitly favoured during the course.

Detailed information regarding the programme of the course, methodology and preparation will be sent to the selected participants.

Target- The course is mainly targeting Science teachers (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, ICT etc..) at secondary level, preservice Science teachers - including teacher students- and teachers trainers.

Certificate - All participants will get an Europass Mobility document along with a certificate on completion of the course.

Follow up - All applicants will be invited to join MOM virtual community (eTwinnning and Facebook) where they will be offered both continuous support and the possibility of an intense networking before, during and after the course.
Jobshadowing opportunities will be offered to a selected number of participants .

Location: The summer school is organized by IIS Cavazzi Pavullo (IT) the former coordinating school of the project. It will take place in Italy in the beautiful landscape of the Appenine Mountains at the boundary with Tuscany.

Accomodation- in a mountain refuge/hotel, single room full board (approx. 70 euros per day). Possibility to share room with another participant (upon request).
Accomodation costs are NOT covered by the course fee and will have to be settled directly by the participants. The organization will offer support in setting up the contact with the hotel and assist for the entire course period with accommodation, plus will offer information regarding the transport to/from the airport.
