CULTURAL HERITAGE AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY

When we use the word culture, we are generally referring to the beliefs, values, customs, and social behaviors of a group that are reflected in their everyday life. Cultural norms are learned as they are passed down from one generation to the next. Though culture can be tied to specific racial or ethnic groups, it can also encompass broader groups of people.Students from different cultural backgrounds bring their own knowledge and life experiences to the academic setting. Teachers should take the time to learn more about the background, values, histories, practices, and traditions of these students and their families
88% of European citizens agree that Europe's cultural heritage should be taught in schools, since it tells us about our history and culture. The basic idea of heritage education is to offer opportunities to engage in experiences to learn new concepts and skills. By directly experiencing or analysing cultural heritage, learners gain knowledge, intellectual skills and a wider range of competences on issues such as cultural heritage maintenance or societal well-being
The goal of this training program is to share knowledge about cultural heritage and cultural diversity with educators and to help teachers develop their content knowledge and teaching skills within this topic area.
Outcomes of the training program are:
- To be able to understand the general idea of culture
- To be able to demonstrate the different aspects of culture
- To be able to identify tangible and intangible cultural elements
- To be able to explore different methods to teaching a cultural heritage or diversity lesson
- To be able to explain the concept of the experiential learning cycle and how it is used in teaching.
- To be able to have teachers reflect on their own practice of teaching heritage and diversity themes
- To be able to develop outlines of a curriculum for teaching cultural heritage and cultural diversity in their classroom
