CLIL in Practice: Focus on Florence

This engaging and fun course uses the city of Florence as content and aims at developing academic and language teachers’ knowledge of planning, preparing, and implementing reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities for non-native speakers of a language in their classrooms. It also takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding CLIL (or content based) methodology and introduces course participants to how the theory of teaching language and specific course content (academic or otherwise) can relate to their own classroom practice.

This course includes lots of activity planning, CLIL resources, and aids in the preparation of creative and engaging materials for second or foreign language learners of any language.

By the end of the course, participants will learn the key principles of material development and how to integrate attractive content into effective second language teaching. Participants will become more aware of how to create appropriate activities that are also motivating and engaging to non-native speakers of a language. Both academic content and language teachers will feel more confident and inspired to teach their subjects. Participants will also leave Florence having learned more about the history, people, and places that have made the city of Florence a one of a kind city with a very unique past and present.

Course Learning Outcomes:
• Integrate the four skills of English or any foreign language into the classroom and any school curriculum.
• Design creative and engaging activities aimed to achieve learning objectives in language and content.
• Create an interesting classroom environment where learning is fun and focused on very specific (and relevant) content.
• Become knowledgable about using English in the classroom while engaging learners in collaborative and communicative activities.
• Enhance the learning of languages with new ideas for increasing student interest and motivation by using stimulating and "authentic" materials from the real world.
• Develop ease with using English in your second or foreign language learner classroom as a teacher.

Cultural activities included: 2 Florence Guided Tours and 1 day Tuscan Excursion (usually on Saturday);

I attended the course CLIL in practice :Focus on Florence which took place in Florence from the 29th of July to the 3rd of August.The course was very well organised by Europass , everything was on time and according to the initial planning.Our instructor Sheilla Corwin is a real expert on the subject and she kept us alert and interested during the course. She gave us a variety of tasks which really kept us engaged and promoted cooperation among the participants.Our group consisted of teachers from Ireland, Spain, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria and Greece . We interacted very efficiently with one another and we exchanged good teaching practices during the course. Sheilla's open-heartedness helped for the creation of a pleasant atmosphere.We learnt a lot about the history of Florence where the heart of the renaissance had beaten and I felt awe at the sight of such exquisite and intricate pieces of art I had the chance to see at the museums we visited. An enlightening course , a lovely experience which I would definitely recommend.

I attended the course „CLIL in Practice: Focus on Florence” between 20/08/2018 and 25/08/2018. It was a really useful and funny training. Sheila Corwin is a great expert. Her course was well-organized. She prepared a wide variety of tasks to teach as the CLIL-method and took us to a museum every day. During the course we got to know a lot of interesting things about the history, culture and life of Florence. There were 8 teachers from 4 different countries in our group. We had the chance to collaborate, to get new friends. I could refresh and improve my English knowledge. In general I liked the course very much and I can highly recommend it to you. Thank you for the possibility to take part in this training.

Sheila Corwin's course ""CLIL in practice focused on the History of Florence"" is the best CLIL course I have ever taken and I strongly recommed it. Sheila uses the well known history of Florence as well as the Italian and the Tuscan culture as a framework to teach different CLIL theories and strategies that teachers can later on use with their students. One day she will focus on Michelangelo; the next day she will look at Dante and another day she will cover fashion or cuisine. After the classes, Sheila will take you to visit different places in the city of Florence that were mentioned during the morning activities and she will give you homework related to them. If you like history and art, if you like Italy, if you want to visit Florence and if you want to become a more effective CLIL teacher, then you should apply to take Sheila's course. I was so amazed by her knowledge and the way she transmited it to us, that I suggested her to extend the course one more week so that I have an excuse to come back.
