Better Language Testing and Assessment

Rating: 5/54 users

All our summer courses this year will be run at London Metropolitan University Hollway Rd campus, just 10 minutes by tube into Central London.

Course Outline
All English teachers are involved in testing and assessment of different kinds and this course will help you do it better. Taught in conjunction with a leading expert in testing and assessment of English language, Dr Zeynep Ürkün, the starting point of the course is understanding the links between the goals of your language course, the way you teach and how you test. It also challenges you to think about your view of language and how this interacts with course outcomes, teaching and tests. The course combines lectures and case studies with practical workshops where you work on assessments or ideas for testing that you have brought to the course. We expect you to bring your own device to work on these assessments. Please contact us if this is a problem.

Outcomes
By the end of this course you will:
• understand how to articulate course outcomes
• have new insights into the role of lexis in learning
• be clear on the uses of formative and summative English language testing
• know how to make clear links in your course content, teaching, and assessment

Deciding to attend two Lexicallab courses last summer was the best choice I could have made. I met Hugh at a conference in Prague and hearing him talk about teaching in context just made me feel like I would like to know more. Both courses I attended, Teaching Lexically with Hugh and Andrew and Better Testing and Assessment with Zeynep, certainly helped me develop as a teacher. In addition to it, there is a great social programme and London being London at the top of it… And if you are lucky enough (as we certainly were last summer), you will meet many wonderful people on the course as well. So as far as I am concerned, I can hardly imagine a better summer school for teachers to attend to 😊 As for the Better Testing and Assessment, I would say Zeynep is really a capacity in this field, but more importantly, she knows how to pass her knowledge and she talks about the topics in a really engaging way. So despite the heat wave last July, I would say I learnt many useful things and enjoyed the course immensely.

In July this year I attended the Lexical Lab course Better testing and assessment. I thoroughly recommend this course. Zeynep Ürkün is an excellent instructor. She’s truly professional and an expert in her field who relates to her students in a friendly and calm manner. The course was more than an introduction. We explored the topic in all its varied aspects, gained insight into some of the latest developments and discussed problems associated with testing and assessment. Zeynep’s materials provide an excellent resource on the topic. In the afternoons and evenings, an entertaining and interesting programme was offered which gave us the chance to get to know places in London we hadn’t been to before and to socialise with Andrew, Hugh, Zeynep and the other course participants.

I attended this course this summer and my experience has been absolutely fantastic. 'Better Testing & Assessment' is the course's name and what we saw and reflected on in all the sessions of it. Thanks to this training, I've validated some of my beliefs and practices and also, and most importantly for me, I've learned a lot of things to try out and consider. My two tutors, Zeynep Urkun and Richard Spiby, were incredibly well prepared and displayed and shared their experience in the field. They welcomed our questions and were willing to share anything they could help with. This course has made a difference in my vision, not only in the areas it covered, but also in my vision of teaching and learning. The course organizers were welcoming and very receptive towards feedback on anything related to the course's content and organization. They offered a wonderful array of activities to do after the sessions. I truly recommend this course!

I attended this course this summer, June 31- August 4 (2017). It was unforgettable experience! The course was run by leading experts in this field and real professionals Zeynep Ürkün & Richard Spiby. The course made me change the perspective on the assessment in my context. After it I have a clear view what I need to do in the near future with longer-term goals in mind. While doing the course I got answers to my burning questions. The course exceeded my expectations! It was informative and exciting, the opinion of the experts being really valuable! The important part of the course was the social programme done by Andrew Walkley and Hugh Dellar. That part was amazing as well! We’ve done tours about London, had an insight into the city from the point of view of Londoners, went to a musical, visited Oxford and many other things! The guys were very responsive to our wishes and changed the programme according to our desires. The communication with them was pure pleasure. It’s a great opportunity to ask and learn any question you are interested in, whether that’s a problem with teaching/learning, interest in culture and trends or language peculiarities. I can’t recommend it highly enough! The course BETTER TESTING AND ASSESSMENT with LEXICAL LAB in London is fascinating!
