Classroom Management Solutions for Teachers: new methodologies, effective motivation, cooperation and evaluation strategies - Berlin

Rating: 4/57 users

This course has been created for teachers who want to learn more about managing an effective and up to date classroom that encourages participation and engaged learning using the latest techniques and classroom tools.

Teachers will learn more about managing a classroom through reflection, teacher observation, and case scenarios, which encourage discussion and resolution of the most common classroom problems. Through interactive and engaging activities course participants will share classroom strategies, learn how to establish classroom rules, provide clear instructions, monitor, develop rapport, incorporate pair and group work, and gain tips for encouraging students to reflect on their own classroom behavior. In addition, the course will include discussion on what exactly a Flipped Classroom is and how this new teaching methodology can be organized, prepared, and put to use with the subject being taught. Finally, assessment and evaluation, which is also part of managing an effective classroom, will be addressed along with the incorporation of student portfolios, rubrics, and presentation strategies.

By the end of the course, students will have gained greater insight into what makes a classroom run smoothly and what it takes to “Flip” their own classrooms. They will also become more familiar with Project Based Learning and take away ideas for evaluating student learning and participation effectively.

Included in the program: Berlin Guided Tour and 1 day excursion (usually on a Saturday).

Although I enjoyed the overall experience and loved the city of Berlin, I must confess the course did not meet my expectations at all. The instructor was very kind and nice, but she was not professional. The course was not well organised, with no structure to follow. The instructor did not use any presentation and she just handed out some photocopies with information taken out of the Internet, and never mentioning the author or the source of that information. Also the content was not as expected, very superficial without examples, and it looked improvised. For the first 3 days the Internet connection (wifi) was poor and we couldn’t work on-line, look for information on the net, or log in on the digital apps we were learning about (Edmodo, Kahoot, Edpuzzle). What a waste of time! The instructor didn’t do anything to solve the problem until we asked her to do something! They moved us to a tiny room with no space to move around. At least the connection there was better. We were a nice group of teachers from different countries but we had few opportunities to know each other and work cooperatively. I would have liked to do some group dynamics or games to interact more with the rest of the teachers. I definitely wouldn't recommend the course.

I did learn new teaching methodologies, especially the way the Flipped Classroom and Kagan Structures work. I also learned how to use educational apps, such as Edmodo, Edpuzzle, Screencastomatic and Quizizz, all of which I have already started to use in my classes and suggested to my colleagues at school. Despite the somewhat casual classes of the course, I would definitely suggest it to anyone who is interested primarily in the acquisition of new teaching methodologies and applications, rather than the cultural part of the city (I would not choose Berlin again, but some of the other cities) or making new friends. I would have liked the lessons to be more intense, but not all of the participants would have been able to follow the course in that case.

First of all, I would like to say that the instructor was very nice and helpful, as a person, and tried to make everyone feel good. However, as a professional experience, I wouldn't recommend the course. It wasn't organised and we had the impression that the course was improvised. The contents of the course were poor and, sometimes, inaccurate, not all of them were actually delivered. It was very superficial overall. There were no presentations, no contemporary teaching methodologies, which was a contradiction, considering tha nature of the course. Taking into account the price of the course and the type of students that would attend it, teachers with some experience, I was expecting something else, a bit more professional and profound. I didn't enjoy the cultural activities either, I would recommend local and more professional guides, as in other courses I have attended. I also missed some more group activities or dynamics to make the group (people from different countries, some of which came from the same school) more cohesive, as I've seen in other courses, like encouraging or organising a lunch together or having coffee. Nothing was organised here and the sightseeing tour didn't make up for it, as it wasn't actually not very well organised either.

It was a great experience for me to share and learn together with 15 teachers from different countries. The course was well organised, we had great cultural experience, the teachers were nice and receptive, but a bit inexperienced in classroom management techniques and solutions. However, they knew how to encourage us to share our experience,so, in the end, everybody was satisfied with the result.

The course has been a great experience for me. The possibility of knowing teachers from different countries and contact with different realities and practices was very enriching. Regarding the course, I liked it very much, specially the wide range of interest and meaningful topics, and the interactive and engaging activities. Although I teach rather different subjects, I was able to take some ideas that surely I will apply with my students next year. Finally, I would like to thank Sheila for being so kind, friendly, acessible, enthusiastic and caring, all caractheristics of an excellent teacher.

I think I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to take part in this course and explain why: Your oganitation has been perfect, useful and very efficient. The personal of the school has been very kind and collaborative. I have met a special teacher, Sheila Corwin. She was our teacher and She soon became able to create an empathic climate in the classroom that made it easy, for us, to establish a relationship of cooperation. She has been creative, competent, enthusiastic, funny, practical and very challenging. She has managed the class group of European teachers (Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Croatian and Estonian) in a sublime way, we are so united that I have the feeling that I always know you all. We "pupils" have worked really in engaging  way; we have  used  those strategies that she has recommended to include in our teaching plan: work in pair, learning cooperative, flipped classrooms. Her lessons have always been a very dynamic, varied and rich of many  teaching/ learning  activities that required the use of different abilities, intelligence and skills. We have been able to know the different "worlds" of European  school  and the different  ways to operate by our  European colleagues, to make our way of working and to compare everything with them. The material provided during and at the end of  the course has been very clear, practical and usable for us with  our pupils. I do not find weak points in the course just great strengths ... maybe just one thing: the lack of PCs in the classroom but we could use pc in the laboratory ( under the first floor) at school. The last day of the course we have did a tourist city trip in Postdamm: simply fantastic!!! I hope that in the future I will have  the opportunity to partecipate  a new course with you. It would be really beautiful. Kind Regards, Romina.

Thank you so much for all of it, Sheila! You made me think about a few things and I am really happy I had you as the teacher. One thing was the importance of handouts and in connection with this when we give them and of course clear instructions. I'll definitely want to try out flipped classroom and will ask for more feedback. If this course makes me a better teacher, it'll be thanks to you. Thank you, again!
