Pedagogical and psychological counselling centres
In the Czech Republic, Centres of pedagogical and psychological counselling work directly with children from the age of 3 upwards together with their parents. The centres provide career counselling; participate in activities in the area of prevention of risk behaviour among children and youth; and, assist in the development of educational and psychological competencies of teachers.
Centres of pedagogical and psychological counselling (PPP) participate in the education process, especially in those cases where the education process is in any way impeded. The main part of the PPP activity is direct work with children/school pupils and their parents, especially on an individual basis, but also through group work. Children/school pupils aged from 3 years and up to completion of their upper secondary or tertiary vocational schooling are the target beneficiaries. On the basis of the PPP recommendation, the educational journey of pupils is chosen or amended. In the process of guiding children and pupils, PPP actively influences the process of acquiring and consolidating knowledge, attitudes and value orientation (choice of suitable learning style, family therapy, etc.). They provide career counselling; participate in activities in the area of prevention of risk behaviour among children and youth; and, assist in the development of educational and psychological competencies of teachers. Activities of PPP take place primarily via irregular visits to schools and at guidance institutions.
As a guidance institution, PPPs are established under § 116 of Act no. 561/2004 Coll., on preschool, primary, secondary, vocational and other education (School Act), as amended.
The availability of counselling in the Czech Republic is relatively good. Practically all the regions are served, also via remote sites. Half the staff is represented by psychologists; a third are special educators; and, the rest are social workers, administrative staff and technical staff.
