European pupils against food waste
In Europe, 88 million tonnes of food are wasted each year, including 20 kg per capita of food that is still consumable, at a cost of 143 billion dollars in 2012 (4). This represents between 20% and 30% of food purchased. The European Union is particularly active in the fight against food waste. Since 2018, the European Directive "Waste" obliges Member States to reduce food waste in each sector of the food chain, to monitor food waste levels and to report regularly on progress. In 2020, the European Commission adopted the "Farm to Fork" strategy to legally enforce the reduction of food waste, tighten regulations and explore ways to limit agricultural losses.
At a time when our planet's capacity to meet our food needs is already stretched, it is more than urgent to promote more economical and responsible consumption.
Passerelles Info, as a "UNESCO club", develops health education programmes in schools, and mobilises 75,000 teachers in France and elsewhere (Spain, Italy, Portugal, etc.) around various programmes.
In addition to its education programmes, PASSERELLES.INFO has contributed to "Don't Waste Our Future!" an educational and awareness-raising project for young Europeans and local authorities that ran from 2015 to 2017, involving seven European countries (Belgium, Cyprus, France, Italy, Portugal, Scotland and Spain). The various educational activities, led by students, raised awareness among 2,800 young people and 160 teachers and resulted in a European Youth Charter against Food Waste.
Now, the association is working on the development of a new education programme "European pupils against food waste", at the intersection of health, nutrition and waste management issues.
"European pupils against food waste" is an education and awareness-raising project that targets primary school pupils. Its purpose is to co-write a new teaching guide on food waste based Passerelles’s pedagogical method and the experience on the ground.
There are two operational objectives:
- Create a turnkey educational resource, co-built with partners, to educate pupils about food waste
- Train them to become agents of prevention for the younger generation.
