New handbook on fostering cultural awareness and expression

The new handbook explores and illustrates practices through which cultural awareness and expression – one of the eight key competences defined by the European Union – can be fostered in a direct or indirect way.

As a skill, cultural awareness and expression includes both knowledge and active involvement. An awareness of cultural heritage requires a basic knowledge of major cultural works and of European ideals of solidarity and respect. It is crucial to understand the cultural and linguistic diversity of Europe and the need to preserve it. At the same time it is also essential to be able to express oneself and to relate one’s own creative and expressive points of view to the opinions of others.

The publication is the outcome of the work undertaken by a group of 25 experts representing the EU Member States. The handbook provides inspiring practices and targeted recommendations regarding policies on cultural awareness and expression.

The handbook presents 43 best practices through which cultural awareness and expression is applied in Europe. Some of them are new in the field, others are well-established practices or organisations that have been around for a longer time. Discover three of the practices highlighted in this article.
