Teachers and school leaders are the cornerstone of education. The Erasmus programme (2021–2027) introduces a new action, Erasmus+ Teacher Academies, to support cooperation between initial and continued teacher education providers.
The European Education Area is a broad initiative of the European Commission to help all learners in Europe develop their skills throughout their lives, study abroad and get their learning recognised. The Erasmus+ programme (2021–2027) will help to make this a reality.
The Erasmus+ Teacher Academies will support teacher education institutions (universities, teacher training colleges, course providers) in developing the European dimension of their learning offer and enhancing cross-border collaboration. They will create projects that aim to improve the quality of initial teacher education – the support for teachers in their early years in the profession – and they will explore effective ways to keep teachers’ professional competences developing throughout their careers.
The Academies will support the development of innovative practices, such as the effective use of digital tools for online learning, education for a sustainable environment, teaching in multilingual classrooms, or creating inclusive schools. Moreover, they will help teachers learn by attending joint courses, modules or mobility opportunities, and by learning with peers in professional communities.
Course participants (student teachers, teachers and school leaders) will benefit from professional learning opportunities that are quality-assured, recognised and tailored to meet their needs. Participation will give teachers a European perspective on the profession, language learning opportunities, and valuable intercultural experience.
On 18 March 2021, a webinar hosted by the European Commission brought together representatives of ministries and education stakeholder organisations to discuss teacher professional development in Europe and the potential of this new initiative.
