The Week of Sport – 23-30 September 2018 – is for every European, regardless of age, background or fitness level. It includes the European School Sport Day, involving thousands of young people and their teachers.

Since its creation in 2015, the #BeActive goal is still to inspire Europeans to get moving and to make everyone aware of the importance of physical activity. It aims to help create a #BeActive mindset across all countries to benefit not only people’s health and well-being, but also our society in general.

The European Week of Sport website contains plenty of information to help you and your students engage in the topic. This includes stories from around Europe and a European barometer report with various statistics on sport and physical activity.

2018 Week of Sport

A significant event is the European School Sport Day. In 2017, there were 2 million participants in 7000 events across 26 countries, and 2018 is set to be even bigger. The organisers give five reasons for joining this initiative:

  1. Raise the profile of physical education and sport in schools
  2. Create fun and enjoyment through physical activity for young people
  3. Promote health and well-being for lifelong learning
  4. Encourage social inclusion and develop social competence amongst students
  5. Connect with other European countries

Schools can register at www.essd.eu as well as download a toolkit in 14 languages. All they need to do is pledge to #BeActive for 120 minutes during the school day.
