High/Scope: Educating children for life

Active learning, complete with hands-on experiences is the driving force behind the HighScope method. Students are encouraged to choose what materials they would like to use and teachers are in place to support and guide. For example, if a child is showing an interest in the solar system, a HighScope teacher may encourage him or her to build a model of the planets. Through a version of scaffolding, children are encouraged by their teacher to take the next step in learning. The HighScope Curriculum integrates social-emotional learning content with other academic areas and gives children daily opportunities to practice skills such as emotional self-regulation and problem-solving. Teachers further support social development by helping children learn how to resolve interpersonal conflicts. Children’s interests and choices are at the heart of HighScope programs. By making plans and following through on their intentions, children are taking the first step in the learning process and constructing their own knowledge through interactions with the world around them.

In the HighScope Preschool Curriculum, learning is focused on the following eight content areas:
Approaches to Learning
Social and Emotional Development
Physical Development and Health
Language, Literacy, and Communication
Mathematics
Creative Arts
Science and Technology
Social Studies

High/Scope engages in the following activities:
· Develops curricula (instructional programs, professional development programs, and assessment instruments)
· Trains teachers, caregivers, and youth workers
· Conducts research in education and interprets and publishes what it discovers
· Publicly supports programs and policies that benefit children and youth
· Publishes educational books, videotapes, and other materials

Course Objectives
• Provide teachers with a child development “filter” for observing and choosing appropriate interactions and activities
• Help teachers interpret what young children say and do along a developmental continuum
• Enable teachers to maintain reasonable expectations for young children
• Reinforce children’s play as the primary mechanism for learning
• Allow teachers to be more knowledgeable and intentional in their daily planning for individual children and the class
